I've been following the on-again/off-again relationship between Ben Affleck and the DC Extended Universe for quite some time. I've reported, rather extensively, on the behind-the-scenes turmoil that has been threatening to spill over into the public, and only rears its head in drips and drabs.
I've recently come into some information on the matter that puts a whole new spin on the situation...
While I've always assumed, and conveyed, that the problems were mainly on a professional level, I'm hearing it may actually be way more personal than anyone could've imagined. The natural assumption has been that Affleck has had cold feet about all things DC/Batman because of the ramifications it could have on his career. I'm told, though, that the recent shakeup that saw him step down from directing The Batman mere weeks after declaring that everything was going great- followed by the constant rumors that he's ready to bail entirely- have more to do with what's going on in his personal life.
I'm not interested in celebrity gossip, or TMZ-style sleaze, so I'm not going to get into the details. But I just want fans out there to know that, if what I heard is true, then we need to cut the man some slack. He's got bigger fish to fry than movies, critics, and cowls. Warner Bros seems keen on giving the man time to get his affairs in order and lighten his load so that he's able to stabilize, reenergize, and come back better than ever. For that, the studio deserves a ton of credit.
So just keep that in mind if- or when- he drops out of The Batman entirely. This may all be to help Affleck, "The Man," even if we all want Affleck, "The Artist," to make our fanboy dreams come true.
At the end of the day, that's much more important than whether or not he answers the Bat Signal ever again.
